Music by Periods and Composers
Baroque: is a European style which began in the late 17th and 18th century. Great composers include Bach, Vivaldi, and Handel. This music followed a mannerism which was characterized by ornate detail.
Classical: This is sometimes referred to as the era of classicism and occurred from about 1750 to 1820. Composers from this era included Mozart, Hayden, Beethoven.
Romantic: refers to the music from about 1815 to 1910 that often indicated and expressed emotions of intimate personal attraction and love. Composers from this period included Franz Liszt, Fredric Chopin, and Debussy.
20th Century Modern: is the period of music that was associated with breaking with the past and common practice of music. Some composers strived to redefine was music is even. Composers from here include Shostakovitch, Bartok, and Copland.
Contemporary: is the period of music that started around 1970 when composers started to back away from modernism. Some composers from here include Boulez, Ligeti, and Glass.
